Stopwatches

I took a lunch break and practiced cello for half-an-hour. I used a stopwatch to monitor the time. My wife said it's funny that my son Jonathan (he plays trombone) uses a stopwatch to make sure he practices enough but I need the stopwatch to make sure I don't practice too long. Oh Well back to work.

  1. Does your stopwatch have a count down mode? It's better to count down than to count up so you don't have to break your concentration to check the clock or stopwatch. Just practice until the alarm goes off. An inexpensive kitchen timer also works well for this purpose. I do like to use a regular stopwatch when I am expecting an interrupted session. I can turn it off during breaks, and as long as I remember to start it again when I return I can keep track of total practice time without additional neuronal overhead.
